Content and context

Frederic Thesiger Williams (1861-1902) was born in Jaulnah on 8th August 1861. He was the son of Captain (later Colonel) Augustus Frederic Williams, 9th Madras Native Infantry, and his wife Jane, daughter of the Revd William Polwhele. Williams was commissioned into the British Army in 1881, and served with the Royal Irish Fusiliers in the Sudan in 1884. He was appointed Wing Officer, 26th Madras Native Infantry, in 1885, and served in Burma in operations on the western frontier, 1885-1887. He was made Captain in 1892, and was the Deputy Assistant Adjutant General in the Chin Hills in 1896, and the Deputy Assistant Quarter Master General, 4th Infantry Brigade, China Expeditionary Force, in 1900. He was appointed Major in 1901. Williams died on July 7th 1902, after being mauled by a wounded tiger. He was buried in St Mary's Churchyard, Madras.

Diaries of hunting expeditions in Burma, a letter regarding Williams' death and biographical notes about the Williams family. The papers are accompanied by correspondence between G.H. Williams and the R.C.S. Librarian regarding the gift of the collection, with a biographical note concerning Frederic Williams.
