William Simpson (1823-1899) made his reputation as an artist by his pictures of the Crimean War. In 1859 he went to India and spent three years travelling and sketching scenes which he later turned into finished paintings, but the majority of these remained unpublished. He paid two further visits to India, on one of which he was sent by 'The Illustrated London News' to accompany the tour made by the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) in 1875-1876. The Prince and Princess of Wales purchased a number of drawings and sketches from Simpson's subsequent exhibition.
An album of prints from original drawings by William Simpson. Size of prints is 185 mm x 110 mm (mounted on card). There is a short introduction, a list of plates and descriptive notes on six of the subjects.
