Postcard Collection

'Oilette' postcards of the Gold Coast, published for the British Empire Exhibition of 1924 by Raphael Tuck and Sons, in their original envelopes. The postcards, which were made at the request of Sir Gordon Guggisberg, are coloured reproductions from paintings by Edith Cheesman and were issued in six sets of six. This collection comprises Series I, II (lacking 1 card), IV, V and VI.

Each postcard has two numbers annotated on the reverse, usually in the top right-hand corner, one in ink and one in pencil. The pencilled numbers correspond to the catalogue numbers.

Sir Gordon Guggisberg opened an exhibition of Miss Cheesman's paintings at Accra on 31 January 1924. The event was recorded in the Gold Coast News, no. 25, and, where appropriate, Guggisberg's comments have been included in the descriptions of the postcards.

Since this collection was originally catalogued, a further collection has been given to the Library and is to be found at Y30448L/59-63. With this addition, the Library now has a complete set apart from one postcard in Series III.
