Ringbarked and unringbarked, Comly, Mingenew. 205 x 150 mm. Showing a group of treated and untreated trees. First practised on a large scale in the 1860s, ringmarking [sic] is a technique of killing trees by cutting into the bark to check the flow of sap, and thus making the land free for grass cultivation. The practice has been responsible for the destruction of vast amounts of timber in Australia.

Low tide : pearling fleet, Broome. 200 x 145 mm. Showing four pearl ships on the sand, with a pier behind them. Broome, on the western side of Dampier Land, at Roebuck Bay, replaced Cossack as the main Australian pearling port in the 1890s. By 1903 Broome supported 300 pearling vessels.

Derby, situated inside King Sound, is one of the main exporting stations for cattle and sheep from the north-west districts of Western Australia.
