St. John's Cathedral, Belize. 101 x 77 mm. Showing the rather squat Cathedral buildings. Consecrated in 1812, and situated behind Government House at the southern end of Belize City, St. John's was the first Protestant Church in Central America. The church has its place in the traditional friendship between the English and the Mosquito Indians, who helped in the struggle against the Spanish. Showing Mr Stuart (written in ink on print) standing at the centre of a group of Honduran estate labourers. Mr Stuart wears a gun and holster while some of the workers carry implements indicative of their crafts - saws, hammers, scythes and axes. The caption was probably written by a native assistant of Avery's with an unsure command of English (the rather unformed handwriting strengthens this supposition).
