Carib family, St. Vincent. 153 x 198 mm. An interesting photograph showing a Carib man and wife and three children. A modern caption on the reverse of the print states 'The Last family of true Caribs - St. Vincent 1915 (?)' The date here is certainly wrong , but the rest of the information may well be correct. The Caribs, a warlike seafaring race from the coasts of Bolivia and Brazil originally captured many of the West Indian Islands shortly before the European discovery of the New World, massacring and dispossessing the Arawak tribes. This aggressive attitude they extended to the European colonists. In the case of St. Vincent the last of their many risings took place in 1795 when, aided by the French they controlled most of the island apart from Kingstown for some months. When the British finally regained control, all black Caribs were transported to the 'Red' Caribs in the island who remained loyal to Britian and were not deported . Creator: Unknown. Good condition.. |
