A view of the monument erected in 1905 to celebrate the first English landing in Barbados three hundred years before from the ship 'Olive Blossom.' 'They erected a cross and inscribed on a tree the words 'James K of E and this island' thus constituting possession for the crown in whose uninterrupted possession this island has remained' (part of inscription on monument). Chamberlain bridge, Landing steps, etc, Barbados. 200 x 140 mm. A view looking down on part of the Bridgetown dock area with a sailing ship moored near the Chamberlain Bridge. Larger steam vessels can be seen at anchor offshore in the deep-water harbour. The bridge was presumably named out of gratitude for Joseph Chamberlain's successful fight to induce the cabinet to abolish the bounty system which encouraged European beet production at the expense of imported West Indian sugar. Good condition.. |
