Heart of Sir Geo. Somers here interred. 101 x 151 mm. Showing the tablet erected in 1875 to Sir George Somers near the spot where his heart was interred in Bermuda. Somers was wrecked in Bermuda in 1609 and after building another boat on the island left with supplies for the Virginia Company's settlement at Jamestown (his original mission). On arrival they found the settlers starving and Somers volunteered to return to Bermuda for more supplies. He died however in Bermuda in1610, urging his men on his deathbed to return to Virginia with the promised supplies (a request they ignored). The tablet speaks of his attempts to 'carry succour to the infant and suffering plantations now the State of Virginia.'. Good condition.. |

Bell of the 'Shannon'. 194 x 244 mm. Showing the bell of HMS 'Shannon', dated 1740 and set into the Bermuda dockyard wall. The bell celebrates the victory of the 'Shannon' over the USS 'Chesaspeke' outside Boston during the war of 1813. 'Shannon' probably came to Bermuda to refit and left the bell as a trophy.
