These buildings, planned by H.S. Greaves, supplanted an earlier design by Charles Freeman. Molteno. Early morning at the coal mines. 193 x 142 mm. Showing African labourers gathered around a cooking pot outside stone huts. Situated in the eastern Cape , Molteno no longer boasts the coal mining activity which was started in the area in 1859: the better quality coal from the Transvaal and Natal soon destroyed the foundations of the industry and the town in now noted for wool production.

A general view showing the plant and workings of the Sheba Gold Mining Company. The Sheba mine was discovered in 1884 by the brothers Barber after whom the town was named. '.one of the tow, while at rest on trek, crashed his hammer on a rock by which he sat. Knowing something of geology, he immediately saw that the exposed quartz was exceptionally rich in the metal of which they were all in search. His thoughtless stroke was the nucleus of the famous Sheba mine, which, during its life, has given a phenomenal yield. This discovery and the attendant results, in a few months developed a township that, naturally enough, came to be kown as Barberton and with marvelous rapidity buildings sprang up in straggling street form, the uneven thoroughfares being constanly thronged by eager seekers after fortune.'.

St. Johns. 154 x 106 mm. Showing the 'Gates' (the narrow channel between two rocky headlands) through which the St. John River passes to the Indian Ocean at Port St. John in the Transkei. Since independence the river has reassumed its orginal title of the Umzimvubu or Elephant River.

Port St. John was originally established in native territory not annexed by Cape Colony. It no longer possesses its former commercial importance but is now a popular holiday resort.
