5 Langalabalele Rising Memorial in the pass between Natal and Basutoland, now called the Langalabalele Pass. 141 x 82 mm (loosely mounted on foolscap paper with notes beneath the photograph). Showing two officers of the Basutoland Mounted Police standing in front of the cairn erected in memory of six troopers of the Natal Carabineers killed during the rising of 1873. The rising took place when men of Langalbalele's clan returned from the diamond mines with unauthorised guns. Having ignored orders to answer this charge, Langalabelele fled into Basutoland with an armed force. After successfully repulsing the government forces sent against him, he was betrayed by Jonathon Molapo, captured and condemned to life imprisonment on Robben Island. He was brought back to the mainland after agitation by Bishop Colenso and others.

7 Pack horses on trek, Basutoland. 139 x 82 mm (loosely mounted on foolscap paper with notes beneath the photograph). Showing groups of loaded horses moving across flat grassland with hills in the distance. Caption under photograph reads: 'The above photograph shows wool packs on 'trek.' The method adopted to keep the animals from passing each other, which would be extremely dangerous on narrow mountain paths, is to tie a rope, generally made from horse hair, from the tail of one pony to the bottom lip of the pony behind.'.

Caption under photograph reads: ''Sinqu Pass' the Lesoto name for orange; the Basuto hold that the 'Orange River' does not rise at Mt Aux Sources but at a point about 15 miles south. Hence the name Sinqu has been given to the pass. The above photograph is taken facing Natal.'.

Caption under photograph reads: 'The above photograph shows the extraordinary natural boundary between Natal and Basutoland formed by the Drakensberg. The sheer drop continues for a distance of about 70 miles broken at intervals by passes into Natal.'.

10 'The Buttress' on Mount Aux Sources. 82 x 140 mm (loosely mounted on foolscap paper with notes beneath the photograph). A view looking towards the Buttress, all but the summit of which is concealed by mist. Mount Aux Sources lies in the Drakensberg Mountains near the Transvaal-Basutoland border and was, until 1951, thought to be the highest peak in South Africa.

Showing a large crowd of Basuto women seated in front of a small stone church with thatched roof. Caption under the photograph reads: 'Services are not held every Sunday, but when the visiting minister does put in an appearance the people from many miles round flock to the place of worship. The churches are generally used for school purposes during the week.'.

A view looking upstream along the Maletsunyane River towards the 630 foot waterfall generally known as the Lehiban Falls after Father Francois Lehiban, who made the first recorded visit to the spot in 1881. The gorge itself is generally known as Semonkong, 'the place of smoke.' Caption under photograph reads: ''Maletsunyane Falls' 630 ft, one of the grandest sights in Basutoland.'.

Situated in eastern Basutoland, the town was founded in 1888 as a site to facilitate the paying of taxes and the issuing of passes.

A view from the neighbouring hill looking down on Mbabane with the race course in the foreground, the village beyond, and alluvial tin workings in the Mbabane River in the background. An interesting view showing the smallness of Swaziland's capital in the early years of the century. Originally a settlement near a cattle kraal established by King Bandzene (1857-1889), tin was discovered in the Mbabane River in 1892 and the arrival of a Special Commissioner who set up administrative headquarters in the village in 1902 gave the impetus for growth. In the 1966 census the town had a population of nearly 14 000.

37 Coronation service at Mbabane for H.M. King George V. 208 x 155 mm. Showing the open air service held at Mbabane in celebration of the coronation of George V on June 22 1911 . At the right hand stand a row of veterans. Facing the camera is a group of wives and children standing on and in front of the veranda of a bungalow. The third side of the square is made up of a detachment of African troops. In the centre a clergyman stands next to a flag mast. Robert Thorne Coryndon (1870-1925) can be seen at the extreme left of the bungalow group. This service was held at the Government Offices: the view is northwards.

Proprietors'), a long single storied building with a wooden trelliswork veranda and corrugated iron roof. Beside it stands the stores, a small circular hut with thatched roof. The town (now abandoned) was named after Alex Forbes, who discovered gold in the region in the late 1870s. It is situated about 15 miles west of Mbabane.

The Tati Concessions, centred around Francistown, were originally part of Matabeleland. Gold was discovered in the area in the mid 1860s and a mineral concession, which passed through many hands, was obtained from Lobengula in 1869 and lasted up to independence.

62 Native Police at Kazaniela [Kazungula]. 139 x 82 mm. Showing five native policemen standing with shouldered arms in front of a wicker stockade. Beside them stands a European sergeant (possibly Quartermaster Sergeant Fosdyce). Kazungula is a small village in the extreme north-east of the North West District (Chobe).

63 Chief Lewanika's State canoe and paddlers - Kazungula. 104 x 81 mm. A view from the riverbank showing the long wooden canoe being paddled by a large group of warriors. Lewanika (1842-1916) stands in the centre of the boat wearing a European jacket and hat. Litunga of Bulozi (King of Barotseland) from 1878-1884 and 1885 until his death in 1916, Lewanika (also known as Lubosi) had as one of the prime objectives throughout his reign the strengthening of Luzi power through an alliance with the British authorities. Unfortunately the alliances he made (in the form of concessions in the 1890s) placed him largely under the domination of Rhodes and the later years of his reign were spent in fruitless appeals to England for the nullification of these contracts until finally the Order in council of 1911 incorporated Barotseland into the larger unit of Northern Rhodesia (Zambia).

65 Linyati River - Bech. Protect. 140 x 83 mm. A view looking across the Linyanti River, with a figure seated on a rock in the foreground and forest on the farther bank. The Linyanti (also known as the Kwando) runs for part of its course along the southern section of the Angola-Zambia border. The negative has written on it the caption 'above the rapids.'.

71 Resident court at Kgama's Kgotla, Serowe, Bech'd Protc. 86 x 86 mm. Showing a large group of Africans seated in the open square at Serowe for a 'Kgotla', or formal meeting of the village called by the headman. The figure addressing the meeting this meeting is probably Khama or (Kgama) III (circa 1830/7-1923), Chief of the Ngwato (Bamangwato from 1875 until his death. The figure is too far away to be identified with certainty.
