Title Photographs of the Cesnola Collection of Cyprus Antiquities
Reference Y3018F
Creator Unknown
Covering Dates circa 1900
Extent and Medium 43 images in 2 boxes; Generally in fair condition.
Content and context

Photographer unknown.

A collection of loose photographs, mounted on card, measuring approximately 210 x 160 mm. The prints are uncaptioned although notations regarding the style of pieces have been added in pencil. Some attempt has been made to assign the pieces photographed to a particular style, but it should be emphasised that these attributions are those of a layman and make no claim to exactitude. Plates 33-43, mainly photographs of vases, have not been identified, although probably easily recognisable to a specialist.

Further information

Several of the pieces are illustrated in: Myres, John Linton (1914), Handbook of the Cesnola Collection of antiquities from Cyprus, New York : Metropolitan Museum of Art. This volume gives a description of all the major objects in the Metropolitan Museum.

Several pieces are also illustrated by engravings in Cesnola's book: Cesnola, Luigi Palma di (1877), Cyprus: its ancient cities, tombs, and temples. A narrative of researches and excavations during ten years' residence..., London : John Murray.

For photographs of other objects in the Collection, and further information about the Cesnola family, see Y3018C.
