| Content and context |
205 x 152 mm. A view showing the Cathedral of St Nicholas on the horizon, with the remains of the Nestorian Church in the foreground: 'Until recently it was used as a stable for camels and other animals by the Moslems, but the Orthodox community of Famagusta have now obtained permission to make use of it and have 'restored' several parts. Such a restoration to a religious use is very unfortunate under the circumstances. The interesting peculiarities of one branch of Christianity will naturally be obliterated in adapting the monument to the use of another church.' (Jeffery 1918, p.144). In the footnote on the same page, Jeffery also refers to the church as 'a quite unique monument ... built in the best European Gothic manner of the XIVth Century'. |
