Saint Nicholas [and] Church of the Nestorians, Famagusta. 205 x 152 mm. A view showing the Cathedral of St Nicholas on the horizon, with the remains of the Nestorian Church in the foreground: 'Until recently it was used as a stable for camels and other animals by the Moslems, but the Orthodox community of Famagusta have now obtained permission to make use of it and have 'restored' several parts. Such a restoration to a religious use is very unfortunate under the circumstances. The interesting peculiarities of one branch of Christianity will naturally be obliterated in adapting the monument to the use of another church.' (Jeffery 1918, p.144). In the footnote on the same page, Jeffery also refers to the church as 'a quite unique monument ... built in the best European Gothic manner of the XIVth Century'. Saint George des Latins. 207 x 156 mm. A view showing part of a ruined church, possibly that mentioned by Di Cesnola: 'South-east of the town [Kyrenia], about an hour's ride from it, and midway up the mountains, stands an imposing Medieval ruin, called 'Lapais'. It was an abbey, built by King Hugh III, and belonged to the Latin Church, but was destroyed by the Turks when they captured the fortress of Cerynia' (Cesnola 1877, p. 237).
