80 x 129 mm. A full length portrait showing Berkeley standing in front of an unidentified building. He is dressed in what Reid (1960) describes as 'his usual outfit of bush jacket and shorts and large old fashioned khaki helmet.' Berkeley (1864-1942) joined the Malayan Civil Service as an Inspector of Police in the Dindings in 1886. He was appointed District Officer, Upper Perak in 1904 and with the exception of a period of war service from 1914-1917, remained in this post until his retirement in 1926. Berkeley created what almost amounted to a feudal domain in Upper Perak and stories of his contempt for officialdom and the modern world abound.
