113 x 149 mm (mounted on card). A full length portrait showing Pickering seated at a garden table in Locarno where he lived between circa 1902-1906. Pickering (1840-1907) served in the Far East in the Mercantile Marine between 1856 and 1862, joining in that year the Chinese Imperial Maritime Customs at Foochow; from 1866-1870 he was employed by a mercantile house in Formosa and in 1871 was appointed a Chinese Interpreter in the Starits Settlements Civil Service. He became Protector of Chinese in 1877, but his career was cut short by a head wound received in 1887 which obliged him to retire in 1889.
