Sir Alaidin Sulaiman Shah, Sultan of Selangor, 1936. 187 x 240 mm. A formal half-length portrait of Sir Alaidin Sulaiman Shah ibni Al-Marhum Raja Muda Musa (1865-1938), Sultan of Selangor 1896-1938. The protrait is signed, and dated November 18 1936, and the Sultan wears the order of the K.C.V.O. (Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order) with which he was presented in October 1936 during a trip to England for his health. Sir Hugh Low, 1884. 103 x 143 mm. A head and shoulders cabinet portrait of Sir Hugh Low with a note in Swettenhams hand on the reverse reading: Sir Hugh Low in 1884, wearing the K.C.M.G. (Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George) Star which was given to him by the people of Perak. Sir Hugh Low (1824-1905), after travelling to the east in search of orchids, was appointed Inspector of Labuan in 1848. He was appointed British Resident in Perak from 1877-1889. Creator: Unknown. Hugh Clifford and Martin Lister, 1886. 97 x 143 mm. A cabinet portrait showing a seated Hugh Clifford and the Hon. Martin Lister (1857-1897) standing behind him. Lister, after an unsuccessful planting career in Ceylon and Malaya was a local appointee, becoming Secretary to the British Resident, Perak in 1884; the following year he became Magistrate and Collector, Ulu Selangor, and in 1887 was appointed Superintendent, Negri [i.e. Negeri] Sembilan. He became the first Resident on the federation of old Negri Sembilan with Sungei Ujong and Jelebu in 1895 but died two years later at Suez while on his way to England. Creator: G R Lambert and Co. William Alexander Pickering, [circa 1902-1906]. 113 x 149 mm (mounted on card). A full length portrait showing Pickering seated at a garden table in Locarno where he lived between circa 1902-1906. Pickering (1840-1907) served in the Far East in the Mercantile Marine between 1856 and 1862, joining in that year the Chinese Imperial Maritime Customs at Foochow; from 1866-1870 he was employed by a mercantile house in Formosa and in 1871 was appointed a Chinese Interpreter in the Starits Settlements Civil Service. He became Protector of Chinese in 1877, but his career was cut short by a head wound received in 1887 which obliged him to retire in 1889. Creator: Büchi, Faelli, fl 1900-1909, photographer. Sir Ernest Birch (1857-1929) was the son of James Birch, the first British Resident in Perak., and served in the Malayan Civil Service from 1878-1910. Hubert Berkeley, circa 1922-1923. 80 x 129 mm. A full length portrait showing Berkeley standing in front of an unidentified building. He is dressed in what Reid (1960) describes as 'his usual outfit of bush jacket and shorts and large old fashioned khaki helmet.' Berkeley (1864-1942) joined the Malayan Civil Service as an Inspector of Police in the Dindings in 1886. He was appointed District Officer, Upper Perak in 1904 and with the exception of a period of war service from 1914-1917, remained in this post until his retirement in 1926. Berkeley created what almost amounted to a feudal domain in Upper Perak and stories of his contempt for officialdom and the modern world abound. Creator: Unknown. Good condition. Modern copy.. |
