4 Group of those in Hall during ceremony [conferring of KGCMG on Sultan Ibrahim of Johore, May 11 1916]. 284 x 214 mm. A group photograph of the Sultan, European officials and Malay soldiers gathered on the steps of a specially erected open-sided wooden platform at some stage during the proceedings. Sultan Sir Ibrahim (1873-1959), who ruled from 1895 until his death, stands at the centre of the group next to Sir Arthur Henderson YOUNG (1854-1938), Governor of the Straits Settlements 1911-1919. Showing a mixed European and Malay group seated in front fo a summer house beside an ornamental pool in the Japanese Garden. Sultan Sir Ibrahim (1873-1959) is seated with the Sultana in the centre of the party. Their son, the future Sultan Ismail (1894-) is seated six places to the left of the Sultan. No other figures have been identified.

The two keepers stand behind the animals, with spectators grouped in front of the building in the background. Probably taken on the same occasion, and from the same location as BAM 6/8 and 6/10.

Clayton left Kelantan at the end of March 1914, which offers a terminal date for the photograph. The group of uniformed Malays has not been identified but they are possibly members of the police since Kelantan had no standing military forces. The figure standing beside Langham-Carter is Sultan MUHAMMAD IV (d 1920) who reigned until 1920; to the left of the child stands the future Sultan ISMAIL (d 1944) who reigned from 1920-1944 and beside him IBRAHIM (circa 1898-1960), Sultan from 1944-1960.

19 Farewell to J.D. Gimlette, Kelantan, circa 1916. 264 x 233 mm (mounted on card). A group photograph of European officials, medical staff and orderlies gathered to say farewell to J.D. Gimlette. Other identified figures in the group are Mr and Mrs William Langham-Carter. The precise date of Gimlettes departure has not been determined, but this photograph must have been taken prior to August 1915, when Langham-Carter departed on furlough. Dr L.H. Taylor who took over from Gimlette, is seated at the left of the group.

20 Visit of Cecil Clementi, Kelantan, June 18 1930. 292 x 238 mm. A group portrait of the Governor with European and Malay officials posed in front of the Kelantan Residency. No identifications are given with the print, but Sir Cecil CLEMENTI is seated at the centre, with Alwyn Sidney HAYNES, British Adviser on his left and Sultan ISMAIL on his right. Clementi visited Kelantan from the 18th-22nd of June 1930, and the Kelantan Administration Report (1930) states that he: after a very full programme of work which included visits to Pasir Puteh and Kuala Krai, left by train travelling over the railway construction line to Pahang and staying one night each at Kuala Gris and Gua Musang. His Excellency received a very hearty welcome from representatives of all the communities in the State at each place which he visited: and at Kota Bharu [i.e. Baharu] a banquet was given at the Balei Besar by his Highness the Sultan, and there were also a garden party [presumably when the photograph was taken] and official dinner at the Residency.

A view looking along the landing stage towards the gangway along which Sir Laurence Nunns GUILLEMARD (1862-1951), Governor of the Straits Settlements 1919-1927, is disembarking from a river steamer. Alwyn Sidney HAYNES, Secretary to Guillemard, stands behind him at the top of the gangway. This visit, on January 12 1921, was Guillemard's first to Kedah.

A group photograph of William Roger SANGUINETTI (1871-), with friends and colleagues posed in front of the Kedah Club. Sanguinetti served in the Public Works Department FMS from 1900; from 1921-circa 1926 he was State Engineer, Kedah and this latter date, taken in conjunction with the postings of some of the other figures in the group, is the most likely time for this photograph to have been taken. 30 Opening of Wan Mat Saman Bridge, Alor Star, 1926. 200 x 116 mm. Showing Sir Abdul HAMID HALIM SHAH, Sultan of Kedah, on the point of cutting the tape to open the new bridge. Beside him stands Alwyn Sidney HAYNES, acting British Adviser. Other figures in the group include Haji Sir Mohamed SHERIFF; the Regent of Kedah, Tuanku IBRAHIM; Syed Jan (?); Syed Mohamed IDID; Tuanku Johamed JAVA; and Tuanku BADLISHAH, later Sultan. The Kedah Annual Report (1926) gives this description: "The Wan Mat Saman Bridge which crosses the Kedah River at the entrance to Alor Star was completed by the end of the year at a total cost of $130,000, and was opened by his Highness the Sultan on the 3rd day of the new year (14th July 1926). The Bridge consists of 5 spans and totals 280 feet. The centre span is 80 feet. It is made entirely of reinforced concrete, the longest piles being 75 feet long, of which 48 are below the bed of the river".

The Kedah Annual Report (1936) states: "A very successful exhibition was held over a period of three days ---- in Alor Star, which provided for exhibits of agricultural products, rubber, livestock, village and school handicrafts, and commercial and departmental exhibits. In addition to these a special exhibit of a model Weekly Fair was organised. All sections were well supported and the standard of the majority of the exhibits was good, winning exhibits from various sections being forwarded to the Malayan Agri-Horticultural Exhibition in Kuala Lumpur".

41 P.W.D. Jetty, Kuala Trengganu [i.e. Terengganu], during floods, December 25 1926. 136 x 79 mm. A view looking along the jetty before the worst of the flooding. An arrow on the print shows the level water reached on December 29. A note on the reverse states that the jetty was under a foot of water on November 4; in the second bout of flooding it was submerged to a depth of five feet.
