265 x 208 mm (mounted on card). A group portrait showing Europeans, Chinese, Malays and Indians arranged (probably) in front of the Residency, Kuala Lumpur. Figures identified in Swettenham's hand beneath the print are: YAP AH SHAK (d 1889); Chinese businessman and trader; arrived in Kuala Lumpur 1870; Capitan China 1885-1889; Magistrate and High Court Assessor under British Administration; Dr Augustine W. SINCLAIR; formerly Medical Officer in Upper Sarawak, Borneo and Kinta, Perak; Residency Surgeon, Health Officer and J.P., Selangor 1882-1891 or 1892; (Sir John Pickersgill RODGER (1851-1910): Chief Magistrate, Selangor 1882; Acting British Resident, Selangor 1884-1888; British Resident, Pahang 1888-1896; British Resident, Selangor 1896-1901; British Resident, Perak 1901-1904; Governor Gold Coast 1904-1910. YAP AH LOY (1837-1885); Chinese miner, business entrepreneur and administrator in Selangor; born in Kwantung, to Malaya 1854, to Kuala Lumpur 1862; Capitan China 1869-1885; Captain Harry Charles SYERS (1853-1897). Rodger is seated at the centre of this group of officials so the photograph was presumably taken between his appointment as Acting Resident (1884) and the death of Yap Ah Loy in April of the following year.
