Taiping from the Residency, 1875. 246 x 168 mm. A view looking down the Residency Hill along rows of Chinese houses with atap roofs, with scrubland beyond and jungle in the distance. A note on the reverse of the print indicates that the houses are probably those running along Main Street. By the end of 1874 Taiping had a population of around 5000. The views of Swettenham, who visited the town in the same year are recorded in (eds Burns and Cowan 1975) and Journal of the Malayan Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society, vol 24, part 4, December 1951, p. 44. J.W.W. Birch who also visited the town on this occasion comments on the Chinese houses and carpenters. These can be seen in (ed Burns, 1975, p. 61).

Taiping, circa 1882. A view looking down from Residency Hill over a section of Taiping, with the Padang in the foreground, houses and shops beyond and hills in the distance. The photograph when compared with the preceding print, gives some indication of the prosperity brought to the town by the tin mining industry during the early years of British administration: apart from the grouth of the town, the buildings themselves are of a more substantial appearance, mostly of two storeys and roofed with corrugated iron. A description of Isabella Bird's impressions of Taiping during her visit in 1879 is found in Bird (1883, p. 280). The Governor of the Straits Settlements, Sir Frederick Weld, also noticed these recent improvements when he made a tour of the Protected Malay States in mid 1881. These are recorded in Correspondence relating to the Protected Malay States (c. 3428 of 1882 p. 2).

Taiping about 1884. 242 x 188 mm. A view looking down from the Residency Hill over the town of Taiping, with jungle in the distance. The photograph possibly shows the area to the right of that seen in the preceding prints although the photographs do not match up exactly.

Taiping about 1884-1885. 242 x 169 mm. A view looking over part of the prison stockade towards wooded hills in the direction of Kamunting, two miles north-north-west of Taiping. In the foreground are a number of atap houses, with the brick wall of the prison beyond and a wooded palisade enclosing some of the prison buildings. The unsatisfactory state of the prison is described in the Perak Annual Report for 1884 (enclosed in Further correspondence respecting the Protected Malay States (C. 4958 of 1887, p. 23).

Looking over the mines in Larut, 1880s. 108 x 226 mm. A view looking past a tall tree on a hillside towards a settlement in the valley below, with excavated land, the result of tin mining activity, in the foreground. This print appears to be part of a larger original which has been cropped.

Treasury, Taiping circa 1882. 246 x 188 mm (mounted on card). A view looking between palm trees towards the Treasury, a whitewashed stone building with tiled roof. This does not correspond with the description of Isabella Bird which describes the building in 1879 as a substantial dark wood building (Bird, 1883, p. 280) and therefore presumably is the new Treasury and Audit Offices offices, built 1884-1885 at a cost of $10, 000 (See Further correspondence respecting the Protected Malay States (c. 4958 of 1887, p. 273).

Victoria Bridge across Perak River, circa 1899. 285 x 210 mm (mounted on card). A view showing the Victoria Bridge, an iron girder construction mounted on stone piles, on the Ipoh-Taiping line and Enggor. The Perak River at this point is over 1000 feet wide and subject to severe flooding; original designs had allowed for a rail level 34 feet above the normal water line, but this was later changed to 40, a valuable decision in the light of the 1926 floods which brought the water level up to the bottom booms of the bridge. Preliminary bores were taken along the central line of the bridge in 1897, and after delays caused by floodingin 1897 and 1898 and the non-arrival of steel in 1899, the bridge was opened for traffic on March 21, 1900. This photograph was probably taken shortly before this time since although the bridge appears finished there is still scaffolding in place at the farther end.

[Perak group, 1875]. 301 x 217 mm. (mounted on board). A group portrait of Europeans posed in front of an atap house, and captioned on the print Pangkor 1874. This photograph has often been reproduced as a print taken during the signing of the Pangkor Engagement in January 1874 but this is certainly not so and there are several anomalous features which make a positive identification difficult. Beneath this copy of the print the figures are identified (l to r) as: Dr Anderson; Capn. Innes; Captn. Speedy; Sir F.A. Swettenham. Further research provides a few different identifications: 1. Dr Andrew Ferguson ANDERSON; Colonial Surgeon, Straits Settlements 1867-1880 (retired due to ill health). 2. Captain William INNES (1811-1875); Royal Engineers; commissioned 1858; Dover 1859-1861; Canada 1861-1867; Portsmouth, Portland and Shoeburgness 1867-1872; Assistant Colonial Engineer, Penang 1872-1875; killed at the storming of the Pair Salak Stockade November, 1875. 3. Lieutenant (later Colonel Sir) Henry Edward MCCALLUM (1852-1919); Royal Engineers; Private Secretary to Sir William Jervois 1875-1877; Superintendent, Admiralty Harbour Works, Hong Kong 1877-1878; Singapore 1878-1879; Woolwich 1879-1880; Deputy Colonial Engineer, Penang 1880-1884; colonial Engineer, Straits Settlements 1884-18897; Governor of Lagos 1897-1899, Newfoundland 1899-1901, Natal 1901-1907, Ceylon 1907-1913. 4. Sir William Francis Drummond JERVOIS (1821-1897); Royal Engineers; served in Kaffir War 1846-1847; varous English postings; special missions to advise on fortifications in Canada (1873, 1874, 186), Bermuda (1863, 1869), India (1871-1872), etc; Governor of the Straits Settlements 1875-1877, South Australia 1877-1883, New Zealand 1883-1889. 5. (?) H.F. Plow; first appointment under colonial government 1857; 1st Clerk to Legislative Council of the Straits Settlements; Secretary to Governor Ord 1867-1873; (no further appointments in Straits Settlements). 6. James Wheeler Woodford BIRCH (1826-1875); after brief service in RoyalNavy joined Ceylon Civil Service 1846-1870; Colonial Secretary , Straits Settlements 1870-1874; first British Resident in Perak 1874-1875; Murdered at Pasir Salak on 2 November 1875. 7. John Frederick Adolphus MCNAIR (1828-1910); entered Madras Artillery 1845; Private Secretary to Governor of the Straits Settlements 1857; Comptroller of Indian convicts in the Straits Settlements 1857-1873; as Colonial Engineer superintended the building of Government House, Singapore; officiated as Lieutenant Governor of Penang 1880-1884; author: Perak and the Malays: Sarong and Kris (1878), Prisoners their own warders (1899). 8. Captain STIRLING R.N. 9. Captain Tristram Charles Sawyer SPEEDY (1836-1910); son of soldier James Speedy; served in army 1854-1860; at Emperor Theodore of Abyssinias court 1860-1861; vice Consul, Abyssinia 1863-1864; (?) to New Zealand 1864-1867; Interpreter with Abyssinia Expedition 1868; District Superintendent of Police, Oudh 1869-1871; Superintendent of Police, Pennag 1871; entered service of Montri of Perak 1873; Assistant Resident, Larut 1874-1876; transferred (downgraded) to Durian Sabatang 1877; resigned 1877; made two further trips to Abyssinia 1884, 1897. Plow being in Government employment in the Straits Settlements Blue Books after 1873 and no mention of him accompanying any official tour of Perak. This is possibly explained by a suspicion that the photograph has been tampered with to a greater or lesser extent: McCallums foot appears in front of the chair behind which he stands in a physically impossible way; and the figure of Plow himself looks as if it might well have been pasted on to the original print at a later date. Another, more unlikely possibility, is that the figure is not Plow but Lieutenant Abbott, the only figure on the visit so far unidentified and of whom no portrait has been traced.

Che Muda's house at Kuala Kangsar. 251 x 198 mm. Showing Frank SWETTENHAM, Captain SPEEDY, Raja Indut and Raja Abdulrahman standing with a group of Sepoys and Malays outside Che Mudas house. The photograph was taken during the military occupation of Perak by Major McNair. McNair (1878, p. 168-169) gives this description: 'The residence of the Princess of Perak at Quella Kungsa gives - as will be seen in the illustration, from a photograph taken by the author during the Governors progress - a very full idea of a Malay noble residence. The house to the left is really the kitchen, while that on the right is, as far as its principal apartment is concerned, fitted up with a bed which occupies about two-thirds of the room, greatly resembling in matter of size the Bed of Ware. This house, with the whole of the campong adjoining, was placed by Inche Maida at the disposal of the British during the disturbances, and formed the headquarters of the general commanding and the commissioner with the contingent of troops from India.' Following Birch's murder in November 1875, Swettenham and Innes attacked the Pasir Salak stockade and after an initial repulse (during which Innes was killed) the village was taken. In view of the disturbed state of the country, and in order to impress upon the inhabitants the reality of British control, it was felt that further military action was necessary and troops were sent in from India and Hong Kong under the command of Major General F. Colbourne and Brigadier General John Ross. Ross, in command of the Indian contingent, made his headquarters at Kuala Kangsar (Chinese troops were stationed at Bandar Bharu). The troubles in Perak were in fact swiftly quelled, although a military presence was retained in the state for a further year. The instigators of, and accessories to Birchs murder were caputred and put on trial, the main participants (Maharaja Lala, Dato' Sagar and Pandak Indut) being executed and several others of those involved (Sultan Badulla, the Mentri of Perak, Dato' Laksamana and Dato' Shabander) being exiled to the Seychelles.

The Perak Sikhs at Taiping Barracks, 1880s. 251 x 173 mm. Showing soldiers of the Perak Sikhs grouped on the parade ground at Taiping. In the centre of the group stands the detachment of men trained as gunners with their 9 pounder field guns; these were introduced into the force in 1880. The Perak Sikhs were formed under the command of Captain Paul Swinburne in 1876 from the body of 200 men who had been brought into Perak by Captain Speedy before the State came under British protection. In later years numbers were replenished by recruiting parties sent from Perak to the Punjab. The numbers in the force were raised in 1877 after the withdrawal of the British forces following the suppression of the Perak disturbances, to a body of 200 Sikh guard and 500 police. A this period the force was known as the Perak Armed Police, but in 1884 the First Perak Sikhs were formed from them. On Federation in 1896 the Perak Sikhs and the Armed Police from other states were merged to become the Malay State Guides.

Teluk Anson town itself was not flooded at first, but areas around suffered, and the Perak River came rushing through it swollen to a size said to be past the recollection of the oldest inhabitant.'
