The central figure is Sir Michael Henry WHITLEY (1872-1959), Attorney General of the Straits Settlements from 1925-1929 and the group, which only includes one other European, probably shows members of his staff.

A view from Penang Hill (also known as Government Hill and situated west of George Town) looking south east across a valley heavily planted with coconut plantations towards another range of hills. Beyond these part of the island of Pulau Jerejak can be seen, with the mainland of Province Wellesley dimly visible in the distance.

9 The Esplanade, Penang. 280 x 215 mm. A view from the Fort Cornwallis end of the Esplanade looking west across the cricket ground. At the right the Esplanade runs along the seafront, with the bandstand halfway along. On the further side of the cricket ground Esplanade Road runs across the picture from Light Street to the Esplanade just left of centre the old Town Hall is situated between Esplanade Road and Duke Street, with the Penang Cricket Club pavilion to the right and the Municipal Offices to the right again. 12 Steam ferry, Prai River, Penang. 204 x 151 mm. Showing the raft ferry, powered by a steam engine and protected by a roof above the open sides, on the Prai River, which debouches, on the Port Wellesley mainland near Butterworth, opposite George Town. On the raft itself are two Europeans in white uniforms, two hack gharries and a number of other passengers. A photograph probably taken in 1884 on completion of improvements to the Prai ferry.

13 Pulo Reino [i.e. Pulau Rimau] Lighthouse, Penang. 210 x 155 mm. A general view of the lighthouse neighbouring buildings on the small island of Pulau Rimau which lies off the extreme south east tip of Penang Island. From the piles of building material and newly cleared bush still in evidence, the photograph would appear to have been taken around 1883. The lighthouse was built between 1881-1883 and the light erected the following year (Straits Settlements Blue Books, 1881-1884).

A view looking down, probably from the base of the lighthouse onto the long, single storied wooden building with verandah and tiled roof. Muka is situated at the extreme north-west tip of Penang Island. A photograph probably taken shortly after the completion of these buildings in 1884 (Straits Settlements Blue Book, 1884).

30 Officers quarters, Fort Frederick, Trincomalie [i.e. Trincomalee]. 202 x 137 mm. Showing the compound inside Fort Frederick, which is situated on a promontory to the east of the town and protected by the northern approaches to the harbour. At the left of the print is the road leading to the main entrance, while at the right are the Officers quarters which back onto the sea. The road and quarters are separated by a tree-lined grass recreational area. Accompanying the print is a diagram listing the occupants of the various bungalows. Trincomalie was occupied in the seventeeth century by the Portuguese and taken from them by the Dutch in 1639. After several changes of ownership it was ceded to Britain in 1802. Fort Frederick was built by the Dutch in 1676, two years after they had retaken Trincomalie from the French. Photograph probably taken by M.A. Cameron.

34 Quetta. 275 x 206 mm. A view showing part of the Cantonment area (precise location unidentified) (precise location unidentified) of Quetta, with mountains beyond. The roads (lined with containers for growing trees) are laid out on a grid pattern, with army quarters (mainly small bungalows) grouped on the plots of land. Quetta was secured by treaty from the Khan of Khalat in 1876 and this photograph was probably only taken a few years later since both the buildings and gardens have a recently completed look. It is not clear when, or indeed if Cameron visited Quetta, but he may have been involved in some of the construction work.

39 Penang : Beach Street. 272 x 206 mm. A view looking along Beach Street which runs NE-SW parallel to the waterfront and behind Victoria Street and Weld Quay. In the right foreground a three storey building houses G. Izolphe's hairdressing saloon, the Grand Hotel, the Pilots Club and Abdoul Sanat, watch-makers; these premises were later taken over by Kennedy and Co. Further down the street are the offices of the Pinang Gazette press, which in the left foreground are the Criterion Tiffin and Billiard Rooms.

41 Kling women, Alma Estate, P[rovince ?] Wellesley. 237 x 183 mm. A carefully posed study of five Kling women grouped in front of the whitewashed wall of a European house. The Klings (the term has since the turn of the century been considered highly deregoratory) were the Tamil immigrants who formed the lowest classes of coolie labour. The women in this picture wear saris and the characteristic toe and nose rings. The Alma Estate, situated some seven miles from Prye, originally consisted of some 500 acres planted out by a Mr Wilson during the Crimean War. It was acquired by Leopold and Emile Chasseriau during the 1890s and by 108 comprised 3000 acres containing 800 acres under tapioca, 60, 000 rubber trees and 30,000 coconut trees. The largest proportion of the workforce at this period was Tamil.

53 Memorial to Captain Light, Penang. 62 x 88 mm. Showing the statue of Captain Francis Light (1740-1794), founder of Prince of Wales Island (Penang) in 1786. Light died of malaria on the island and was buried in the old Protestant Cemetery in Northam Road, George Town. The bronze statue designed by Frederick J. Wilcoxson, was originally sited in Fort Cornwallis and was unveiled in 1939. It was removed during the Japanese occupation and re-erected in 1946 in front of the High Court in Light Street. The only known contemporary representation of Light is Thomas Medlands engraving of Elisha Trapaud's drawing of the founding ceremony.
