Title Hotel d'Europe, Penang
Reference BAM 10/55
Extent and Medium Good condition, aprt from slight fading at edges.
Content and context

277 x 195 mm. A view from the junction of Farquhar Street and Penang Road showing the wall surrounding the hotel but very little of the buildings themselves. A sign in the right foreground indicates the hotel entrance. The Hotel dEurope was situated just off Farquhar Street on the northern waterfront. The history of the hotel has not been traced but this appears to be the establishment taken over by the Sarkies Brothers (founders of Raffles Hotel, Singapore) and later named the Eastern and Oriental Hotel. Martin Sarkies arrived in Penang in 1869 and was joined by his brother Tigran in the early 1880s. In 1884 they opened the Eastern Hotel in Light Street facing the Esplanade and the following year the Oriental (in what was presumably until that time the Hotel dEurope). The Eastern Hotel was later merged with the Oriental to become the Eastern and Oriental Hotel.
