Papers of the Monk and Sanford Families

The Monk family first became associated with Gloucester through James Henry Monk who was made Bishop of the diocese in 1830. James had attended Trinity College, Cambridge where he was a Fellow and had been Regius Professor of Greek in the University before taking the post of Dean of Peterborough, whence he moved to Gloucester. The latter see was united with that of Bristol and he held the unified see of Gloucester and Bristol until his death in 1856.

The family link with Gloucester was continued by James' son Charles James Monk who was Vice-Chancellor of the diocese and who represented the city in Parliament for many years, retiring finally in 1900, the year of his death. Charles had married Julia Ralli, daughter of one of the pillars of the Greek community in London. After J H Monk's death, his widow and two of her daughters, Jane Emily and Penelope Anna, divided their time between Rome and England. When their mother died, the two sisters settled in London. A third daughter, Mary, had married the Hon. George Mostyn in 1851.

Charles Monk's only son was also called James Henry and settled in London. He died without offspring, together with his wife, when a German bomb fell on his house in WWII. Of his sisters, Constance married Eugene A Sanford of Triley Court, son of Edward Ayshford Sanford and Christine Percival, thus bringing together the two families whose papers are recorded in this catalogue. The Sanford family are a long-established family with estates in Somerset and Devon including Nynehead Court and Triley Court. The members of the family whose papers form part of this archive come from the branch of the family that owned the latter property.
