Content and context

The book `contains an extremely readable account of the analytic approach to the theory of the distribution of primes in arithmetic progressions' (Memoir, p.167). Davenport submitted a revised ms. in 1969 but the second edition (revised by H.L. Montgomery) did not appear until 1980.
