Content and context

Although tradition suggests that the Babington family originate from Normandy, the earliest members in this country that can be traced come from Babington (now Bavington) Parva in Northumberland. By the sixteenth century a branch of the family had established themselves in Leicestershire at Cossington and, sometime around 1600 an offshoot of this branch established themselves at Rothley Temple in the same county.

This collection includes papers, mostly correspondence) of the following. Charles Roos Babington, 1818-26; George Gisborn Babington, 1809-37; Jean Babington, 1802-40; Joseph Babington 1822-26; Matthew Babington, 1821-33; Thomas Babington, 1788-1837; Thomas Gisborne Babington, 1809-34; Colin Macaulay, 1811-35; Zachary Macaulay, 1791-1835; Sir James Parker, 1818-1857; Margaret Parker, 1820-43; Mary Lady Parker, 1806-57; Susan Darroch 1820-39; Lydia Rose 1803-44 and Mary Ellen Rose, 1836-1921
