Refers to the 'rage and fury in the Whig tea-cup at Gladstone's resolutions'. Mentions that he breakfasted with the latter that morning, 'and found him wholly absorbed in an eager controversy with a learned [not odious] Jew pundit as to the [comparative] sense of colour-differences in ancient times.
