JH's aggresive critique of the values and objectives underlying the foundations of the British Association for the Advancement of Science: Science 'is often called a republic but such a society as is here proposed will make it a democratic tyranny with all the vices of the narrowest oligarchy' [a transcript of this part of the letter can be found in Jack Morrell and Arnold Thackray ed.
