1/1 "Scottish Office, 1924". Letters from Sir Archibald Sinclair (later Viscount Thurso) to Lord Novar, Mr William Adamson and other Scottish ministers with replies thereto and very occasional letters from Sir Archibald's constituents. All the correspondence arises from constituency matters raised by Sir Archibald as MP for Caithness and Sutherland and many concern crofting matters, land settlement, loans, grants, grazings, peat-cuttings etc. More general subjects include unemployment in the constituency and possible public works schemes on roads, water supply, schools etc wireless communication with Stroma and a prolonged dispute between the proprietor and local fishermen concerning the mussel beds at Tarlogie. 1923–1924
2/1 File "Secretary of State for Scotland 41/1". Constituency correspondence. Almost all arises from individual cases most of which in turn are concerned with crofting matters. More general subjects covered include illegal trawling, the construction and repair of roads and the condition and repair of Brora harbour and other piers and harbours in the constituency. A question arising out of forestry operations at Borgie raises issues concerning the relationship of the Scottish Office, the Scottish Board of Agriculture and the Forestry Commission. 1925–1927
3/1 File "Scottish Office 41/1". Constituency correspondence. Apart from individual constituent's cases (almost all concerned with crofting matters) subjects covered include ring-net fishing and the Agricultural Credits (Scotland) Bill. 1928
3/2 File "Scottish Board of Health (Major Elliot) 41/2". Letters by Sir Archibald Sinclair to Major Walter Elliot as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Scotland with replies thereto. All the correspondence is concerned with pension cases of individual constituents. 1927
4/1 File "Scottish Board of Health (Major Elliot) 41/2". Constituency correspondence. There is also a very small amount of correspondence concerning more general matters including the Highlands and Islands Medical Service and the possibility of free vaccination. 1928
4/2 File "Scottish Office. Rt Hon Sir John Gilmour and Mr Adamson 41/1". Correspondence on constituency matters. General matters include illegal trawling and the effect of the Local Government (Sc) Act on religious instruction and the representation of Wick on Caithness County Council. 1929
5/1 File "Scottish Office (Mr Adamson) 41/1". Correspondence on constituency matters. The file includes a very lengthy correspondence on various land settlement schemes at Lairg and Sciberscross. 1930
5/2 File "Scottish Office (Board of Health Major Elliot and Mr Johnston)) 41/2". Constituency correspondence. Apart from pension cases there is a small amount of correspondence concerning housing in Kildonan parish, Watten Nursery Association, Portskerra Water Supply and share fishermen's pensions. 1929
6/1 File "Scottish Office. Department of Health. Mr Johnston". Constituency correspondence. More general matters include wireless communication with Stroma, memorandum by Department and other papers concerning proposed Scottish Tourist Association and notes of conversation with Mr Johnston concerning national marked beef. 1930
6/2 File "Secretary of State for Scotland 41/1". Constituency correspondence addressed to Mr William Adamson. Apart from individual cases the file includes very extensive correspondence regarding Thurso, Wick, Helmsdale harbours and the repair and improvement of other piers and harbours and in the constituency. Other subjects include financial restrictions on the North of Scotland College of Agriculture. Sir Archibald himself became Secretary of State in August 1931 and the file there-after contains letter by his secretary to officials concerning constituency matters. There are also a number of loose departmental minutes by and to Sir Archibald. Most of these deal with constituency matters but others cover general matters within the purview of the Secretary of State. They are very brief and the greater part are largely unintelligible when taken (as here) out of the context of any accompanying papers or correspondence. 1930–1931
6/3 File "Scottish Department of Health 41/2". Constituency correspondence addressed to Mr J Westwood and Mr T Johnston with a few internal minutes (see THRS V 6/2). The majority of the contents concern pension cases. More general matters covered include cases concerning grants under the Highlands & Islands Medical Services, telephone services, housing subsidies etc and a minute to Sir Robert Greig concerning Agricultural Policy and the Department of Agriculture estimates. 1931
7/1 File "Scottish Office 41/1". During the bulk of the period covered by this file Sir Archibald was Secretary of State for Scotland - he demitted office in October 1932. The file contains a certain amount of correspondence and minutes arising from "constituency cases". The bulk of the contents however consists of correspondence with officials and departmental minutes dealing with the whole range of the Secretary of State's responsibilities eg: appointments, police pay, housing policy and subsidies, Moray Firth trawling, report of Economic Advisory Committee on Fishery Industry, fish tariffs, educational endowments, Alkali Bill, Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries Bill, block grants, grading and pricing of meat, poultry industry, potato growing and agricultural policy generally. There are also comments on cabinet conclusions and correspondence with officials regarding the Secretary of State's official arrangements and programme. As with the papers in THRS V 6/2 a number of the items in the file are so brief as to be unintelligible when as here they are taken outside their context. 1932

Contains briefing for the Secretary of State on the problems and statistics of each place visited and the department's interest, works and future plans in each. Indexed. 1932
8/1 Typescript notes with supporting enclosures apparently to brief the Secretary of State for a visit to Caithness and Sutherland. Covers the North of Scotland College of Agriculture, land settlement, schemes for assistance to agriculture, harbours, roads and other public works. Indexed. 1932
8/2 File "Scottish Office 1933". Correspondence between Sir Archibald Sinclair and Sir Godfrey Collins, Mr Skelton and officials of the Scottish Office on constituency matters the majority arising from individual cases - land settlement questions, building loans, grants for agricultural improvements, pensions, public works in the constituency etc. There is lengthy correspondence with the Secretary of State concerning land settlement in Caithness, and the removal of a wreck (SS Linksmoor) from Scarfskerry Harbour and with the Lord Advocate concerning the liability of Sir Archibald's constituents to jury service at Inverness. 1933

Correspondence between Sir Archibald Sinclair and Sir Godfrey Collins and officials of the Scottish Office on constituency matters the majority arising from individual cases - land settlement, agricultural and building grants, criminal convictions etc. Other more general questions concern complaints against the Forestry Commission concerning grazing and use of labour at Borgie, the financial effect of the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1929 on the burgh of Dornoch, fishery questions including illegal trawling and the Diseases of Fish Bill, public works including harbours and piers at John O'Groats, Helmsdale and Brora and roads. Correspondence between Sir Archibald Sinclair and Sir Godfrey Collins and officials of the Scottish Office concerning constituency matters the majority arising from individual cases and concerning land settlement cases, grants under agricultural and building schemes, students loans, appointments etc. They include a very lengthy correspondence concerning land settlement at Ribigill Farm, Tongue. Other matters covered include the financial effect of the Local Government (Scotland) Act, 1939 on the burgh of Dornoch, the policy of the Herring Fishery Board, the County of Sutherland Educational Trust Schemes and the need for a girls' reformatory in Scotland. 1935

The greater part of the correspondence arises from individual cases and the majority concern pensions. The file includes correspondence concerning widows pensions generally, the Consultative Council on the Highlands & Islands, Sutherland hospital services and the Housing (Sc) Bill. 1935

Correspondence between Sir Archibald Sinclair and Sir Godfrey Collins, Mr Walter Elliot and junior ministers and officials of the Scottish Office concerning constituency matters of all types, the greater part arising from individual cases, land settlement, agricultural and building grants, appointments, operation of Housing Acts, pension cases, harbour works at Thurso, Scrabster and Embo etc. A high proportion of the material on the file is concerned with fishery questions, illegal trawling, close times etc. General matters include the salaries of sheriff substitutes and the appointment of Sir Robert Hamilton to the Committee on Scottish Administration. 1936

13/1 File "Duke of Montrose. Scottish Home Rule". Correspondence between Sir Archibald Sinclair, as leader of the Liberal Party and the Duke of Montrose. The file commences with a discussion on possible electoral co-operation between the Liberal and Scottish Nationalist Parties and ends with a decision by the Duke of Montrose to join the Liberal Party. It contains a good deal of detailed discussion on the role of the Scottish Nationalist Party and on the policy of the Liberal Party not only towards Scottish Home Rule but also on Tariffs, Land values etc. 1934–1936
