In August 1914, Alan Lascelles returned from his visit to South America to join his regiment, the Bedfordshire Yeomanry. He did not keep a diary during the war but his correspondence records his experiences at the Front. He was injured in November 1917, but recovered in time to return to France for the last German offensive in the spring of 1918. He was in France when war ended and served briefly in the British army of occupation in 1919. During the war a large number of his close friends from school and university were killed. |
