Content and context

Frank Lascelles was born on 23 March 1841, 5th son of William Saunders Sebright Lascelles, MP, and Caroline, eldest daughter of the 6th Earl of Carlisle. In 1867 he married Mary Emma (died 1897), eldest daughter of Sir Joseph F. Olliffe, Physician to the British Embassy, Paris [France]: they had one daughter, Florence, who married Sir Cecil Spring-Rice in 1904 (and two sons deceased).

Lascelles entered the Diplomatic Service in 1861, and his career included: 2nd Secretary Diplomatic Service (1871); Agent and Consul-General in Bulgaria (1879); Minister in Roumania (1886); Minister in Persia [later Iran], (1891); Ambassador to Russia (1894); Ambassador to Germany (1895-1908).

Lascelles's honours included: GCB (1897); GCMG (1892 (KCMG 1886)); GCVO (1904); PC (1894).

He died on 2 January 1920.

The papers consist of copies of personal papers from various stages in Lascelles's career, and other material relating to Lascelles, including: letters and diary from his posting to Paris [France] during the Franco-Prussian War and at the beginning and end of his position as Ambassador to Germany; the diary of his family's visit to Iran in 1892; press cuttings of obituaries for Lascelles.

The papers were given to Churchill Archives Centre by Lascelles's granddaughter, Lady Arthur, between 1987 and 1988.

LASC 5/1 and LASC 5/2 were amended to LASC 5 and LASC 6 at the time of cataloguing.

The papers are owned by Churchill Archives Centre.
