Content and context

Professor Robert Salmon Hutton was born 28 November 1876. He was a lecturer in Electro-Chemistry at Manchester University, 1900-1908, and was Goldsmiths' Professor of Metallurgy, Cambridge University, 1931-1944. In 1912 he married Sibyl, one of the daughters of Sir Arthur Schuster, and they had two children. The Huttons worked for the Society for the Protection of Science and Learning. At the outbreak of World War II the society transferred to Cambridge. Hutton was on the committee, he was also Honorary Secretary and later Honorary Treasurer. Hutton died 5 August 1970.

The papers relate to the work done by Professor and Mrs Hutton in caring for Jewish, Polish, Czech and other children who were brought to Cambridge from Europe in 1939 as refugees from Nazi persecution and also in attempting to secure release from internment, jobs and educational openings for adult refugees. As well as the case-histories, which comprise the bulk of the collection, are pamphlets, reports and cuttings about the Nazi regime across Europe. There are also first-hand accounts of experiences at this time.

This collection was deposited at Churchill Archives Centre by Mr D Hutton, the son of Mrs Hutton and Professor R S Hutton, in December 1984.
