Hughes-Hallett was born in December 1901, serving as a Midshipman in "HMS Lion", May 1918; in the Norwegian campaign, 1940, in "HMS Devonshire" (despatches); was the Naval Commander during the Dieppe Raid; Commodore Commanding Channel Assault Force and Naval Chief of Staff (X), 1942 and 1943; Captain of "HMS Jamaica", December 1943; in command of "HMS Vernon", 1946-8 and of "HMS Illustrious", 1948-9; Vice-Controller of the Navy, 1950-2; and Flag Officer, Heavy Squadron, Home Fleet, 1952-3. He retired from the navy in September 1954 on his adoption as a Conservative Parliamentary candidate. He served as the MP for East (later North East) Croydon, 1954-64. He was a British Representative at the Council of Europe, 1958-60; and Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport for Shipping and Shipbuilding, 1961-4. He died in 1972.

The collection is open for consultation by researchers using Churchill Archives Centre, Churchill College, Cambridge. Churchill Archives Centre is open from Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm. A prior appointment and two forms of identification are required.
