Haley was born in 1901 in Jersey (Channel Islands) and educated at Victoria College, Jersey.

He joined "Manchester Evening News" in 1922, becoming Chief Sub-Editor in 1925, and Managing Editor in 1930. He became a Director of Manchester Guardian and Evening News, Ltd, 1930, and served as Joint Managing Director, 1939-43. He was also a Director of the Press Association, 1939-43, and Reuters, 1939-43.

He was Editor-in-Chief, BBC, 1943-4, and Director-General of the BBC, 1944-52. Subsequently he was Editor of "The Times", 1952-66, and Director and Chief Executive, The Times Publishing Co. Ltd, 1965-6, and Chairman of Times Newspapers Ltd, 1967. He was also Editor-in-Chief, Encyclopædia Britannica, 1968-9, and President, National Book League, 1955-62.

He died in September 1987.

Includes diaries 1922-86, correspondence 1935-83, and press cuttings.

The papers were transferred to Churchill Archives Centre in 1995 and 1996.

Access and Use

The collection is open for consultation by researchers with prior permission at Churchill Archives Centre, Churchill College, Cambridge. Churchill Archives Centre is open from Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm. A prior appointment and two forms of identification are required.

Researchers wishing to publish excerpts from the volume must obtain prior permission from the copyright holder and should seek advice from Archives Centre staff.
