Russell Grenfell became Lieutenant in 1914. He served on HMS Revenge in the Battle of Jutland in 1916 and later served on teaching staff of Royal Naval College, Greenwich. He published many books on naval matters

This small collection of material consists of correspondence and drafts comprising materials for Grenfell's books: "The Bismarck Episode" (1948); "Main Fleet to Singapore" (1951); "Unconditional Hatred" (1953) and for a projected book on the Norwegian Campaign 1940.

The papers were given to Churchill Archives Centre by Grenfell's widow in 1973.

Access and Use

The collection is open for consultation by researchers using Churchill Archives Centre, Churchill College, Cambridge. Churchill Archives Centre is open from Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm. A prior appointment and two forms of identification are required.

Researchers wishing to publish excerpts from the papers must obtain prior permission from the copyright holders and should seek advice from Archives Centre staff.

The Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives, King's College London holds a small collection of Russell Grenfell's other papers (reference code GB 0099 KCLMA Grenfell).

The collection has been catalogued and a copy of the catalogue is available for consultation in the reading room at Churchill Archives Centre, at the National Register of Archives in London and on the Janus website http://janus.lib.cam.ac.uk.

The collection was originally catalogued by Stephen Roskill in the 1970's. The catalogue was converted by Natalie Adams of Churchill Archives Centre in June 2005.
