Geoffrey Gollin was born 11 May 1901. In 1938 he married Mary West and they had two daughters and two sons. From 1922 Gollin worked on diesel engines for English Electric but in 1926 joined what later became Shell Petroleum Company. Prior to World War II he worked on the development of combustion systems for the Whittle jet engine, 1937-1939. Gollin was assistant on a team led by Isaac Lubbock at Shell which developed a rocket. By 1942 a full-scale rocket was being tested at the Ministry of Supply Weapons Research Station at Langhurst. When possible rockets were sighted in Germany Gollin was recruited to investigate a test site at Blizna in Poland. Gollin died 11 August 1992.
These papers fall into three sections. Firstly there are the memoranda, calculations and diagrams relating to work for Frank Whittle. Secondly, there are papers from the experiments carried out on the Shell rocket. Finally, there is the typescript of a lecture by Gollin on the development of the shell rocket.
Geoffrey Gollin deposited two boxes of papers at Churchill Archives Centre in July 1979 and a further two items in 1980.
This collection is owned by Churchill College.
