Content and context

Channel 4 television commissioned First Circle Films to produce a documentary about the loss of HMS Glorious as part of its Secret History series. The documentary was entitled "The Tragedy of HMS Glorious".

On 8 June 1940, the aircraft carrier HMS Glorious was caught and sunk in the Norwegian Sea by the German battlecruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau. Glorious had been helping evacuate RAF aircraft in the Norwegian Campaign.

The collection of material held at Churchill Archives Centre relates to the preparation of the documentary and includes research notes and correspondence; transcripts and videotapes of interviews, film footage and of the documentary.

The bulk of the collection was deposited at Churchill Archives Centre in 1998 by Ben Barker, who deposited a further six archive boxes in March 2007. Barker had been involved in the production of the documentary programme.

Access and Use

The collection is open for consultation by researchers using Churchill Archives Centre, Churchill College, Cambridge. Churchill Archives Centre is open from Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm. A prior appointment and two forms of identification are required.

Churchill Archives Centre is not able to provide access to audio-visual material unless an access copy of the relevant tape is available. In cases where a Betacam and VHS videotape exists, access to the VHS version would be possible. In other cases, access copies must be made before access can be granted. Access copies may be arranged through Churchill Archives Centre.

Researchers wishing to publish excerpts from the collection must obtain prior permission from the copyright holders and should seek advice from Archives Centre staff.
