Evan Davies was born on 15 June 1917.
He travelled in Germany and learnt German. On his return, he joined the Metropolitan Police, initially working as a constable in the East End of London. He worked for Special Branch, 1938-41, and then became a commando, 1941-5.
After the war, he returned to Special Branch and helped to form an anti-terrorist unit. He was involved in protecting the Prime Minister, Clement Attlee, and the Foreign Secretary, Ernest Bevin, 1945-8, and was one of the detectives assigned to protect Winston Churchill, 1948-50. He was appointed Assistant Superintendent of Police in Malaya, 1950-2.

The collection is open for consultation by researchers using Churchill Archives Centre, Churchill College, Cambridge. Churchill Archives Centre is open from Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm. A prior appointment and two forms of identification are required.
Researchers wishing to publish excerpts from the papers must obtain prior permission from the copyright holders and should seek advice from Archives Centre staff.
