Nicholas Henderson was born 1 April 1919, the son of Professor Sir Hubert Henderson; he was educated at Stowe School and Hertford College, Oxford (Honorary Fellow 1975). In 1951 he married Mary Barber (née Cawadias) (OBE 1988).
Henderson's diplomatic career included: Ministry of War Transport 1940; Office of the Minister Resident at Cairo 1942; Assistant Private Secretary to the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs 1944; Second Secretary Washington [United States] 1947; Athens [Greece] 1949; Foreign Office 1950; First Secretary (Inf.) Vienna [Austria] 1953; First Secretary and Consul Santiago 1956; Foreign Office 1959: Counsellor 1962; Head of Northern Department 1963; Private Secretary to Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs 1963; Minister Madrid [Spain] 1965; Ambassador at Warsaw [Poland] 1969; Ambassador at Bonn [Germany] 1972; Ambassador at Paris [France] 1975; Ambassador at Washington 1979-82.
He was awarded the GCMG in 1977 (KCMG 1972; CMG 1965); and the KCVO in 1991. He died in March 2009.
