Alan Munro was born 17 August 1935, the son of the late Sir Gordon Munro, KCMG, MC and Lilian Muriel Beit; he was educated at Wellington College and Clare College, Cambridge (MA). In 1962 he married Rosemary Grania Bacon.
After his military Service, with the 4/7 Dragoon Guards, 1953-55, Munro's diplomatic career included: Middle East Centre for Arab Studies, 1958-60; British Embassy, Beirut [Lebanon], 1960-62; Kuwait, 1961; Foreign Office, 1963-65; Head of Chancery, Benghazi, 1965-66 and Tripoli [Libya], 1966-68; Foreign Office, 1968-73; Consul (Commercial), 1973-74, Consul-General, 1974-77, Rio de Janeiro [Brazil]; Head of East African Department, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, 1977-78; Head of Middle East Department, FCO, 1979; Head of Personnel Operations Department, FCO, 1979-81; Regl Marketing Director (Middle East), Ministry of Defence, 1981-83; Ambassador to Algeria, 1984-87; Deputy Under-Secretary of State, Middle East/Africa, FCO, 1987-89; Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, 1989-93.
He was awarded the KCMG 1990 (CMG 1984).
