The Papers of Sir John Cockcroft

Title Personal papers
Reference CKFT 21
Covering Dates 1909–1967
Extent and Medium 11 files
Content and context

Including the "black book" in which Sir John Cockcroft recorded information, ideas and questions. It was well-known to scientists and the subject of some strange legends. The pages were kept in a small, black looseleaf notebook with diary entries on one page and a ruled sheet facing it. Subsequently the pages seem to have been separated and are therefore difficult to date. All the entries are in Sir John Cockcroft's small, illegible handwriting. There are no entries before 1938.
