Content and context

The collection comprises copies of original paintings by Sir Winston Churchill. A biographical history of Sir Winston Churchill (WSC) is available as part of the introduction to Sir Winston's own papers. The copies were made and obtained by David Coombs and Minnie Churchill. Minnie Churchill is a Director of Churchill Heritage (2005).

Images of the paintings of Sir Winston Churchill as used in the publication "Sir Winston Churchill's Life Through his Paintings" by David Coombs with Minnie S. Churchill (Pegasus, Limpsfield, Surrey, 2003).

Deposited at Churchill Archives Centre by Mrs Minnie Churchill in February 2004.

The series of CD's comprising high resolution images were numbered 1 to 30. This numbering has been retained.

Access and Use

The collection is open for consultation by researchers using Churchill Archives Centre, Churchill College, Cambridge. Churchill Archives Centre is open from Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm. A prior appointment and two forms of identification are required.

Copyright in Churchill's paintings belongs to Churchill Heritage, from whom permission to reproduce material from this collection must be obtained. Please ask staff for details.

"Sir Winston Churchill's Life Through his Paintings" by David Coombs with Minnie S. Churchill (Pegasus, Limpsfield, Surrey, 2003) is available for consultation at Churchill Archives Centre (shelfmark 759.2 CHU Coo).

Churchill Archives Centre holds the papers of Sir Winston Churchill (references GBR/014/CHAR and GBR/014/CHUR) plus a range of related archive collections. These include the papers of Churchill's wife, Clementine Spencer-Churchill, press photographs, press cuttings, and the Broadwater Collection of Churchill family photographs and albums.

Churchill Archives Centre also has a microfilm copy of Churchill's Prime Ministerial Office papers, 1940-1945 (Public Record Office classes PREM 3 and PREM 4) and holds the papers of several people whose careers were closely linked with Churchill, such as Sir John Colville, Sir George Harvie-Watt, and Sir John Martin. A list of these collections is available at: http://www.chu.cam.ac.uk/archives/collections/classified/Churchill.shtml. Catalogues to these collections are being added to the Janus website.

The collection has been catalogued. A copy of the catalogue is available for consultation at Churchill Archives Centre, at the National Register of Archives in London and on the Janus website http://janus.lib.cam.ac.uk. CHHE 31 is a printed copy of the images, a finding aid to the collection.
