Content and context

HMB produced a very large number of articles, essays and book reviews for periodicals on a wide range of subjects - literature, philosophy, biographical, political, theological etc. in French as well as English; and he was published by French, American and occasionally German journals as well as English ones.

In those cases where a substantial number were written for the same journal they have been assembled together in one file. Unfortunately in a number of cases the journal for which articles were produced cannot be identified - at any rate without prolonged search in the journal's files; and as many of them no longer exist such a step would be very difficult to carry out. The remainder of his articles have therefore been collected into composite files. There is also a considerable number which almost certainly were never published, and these have been filed separately.
