Content and context

Lord Brimelow was born 25 October 1915, the son of William and Hannah Brimelow. He married Jean E. Cull (died 1993) in 1945 and they had two daughters. He died 2 August 1995.

Brimelow was in charge of the Consular Section of the British Embassy in Moscow, 1942 - 45. He joined the Foreign Office in 1945. He held posts all over the world including Havana (1948), Moscow (1951), Ankara (1954), Washington (1960 - 63), and was Minister at the British Embassy in Moscow, 1963 - 66. Brimelow was Ambassador to Poland, 1966 - 69 and Head of the Diplomatic Service, 1973 - 75.

The topic of the conversations covered include Foreign Office attitudes to the Soviet Bloc and Foreign Office personnel in the late 1940s, as well as the conferences at Yalta and Potsdam.

The typescript of his conversations with Lord Brimelow was deposited at Churchill Archives Centre in 1983 by Michael Burd.

The collection is owned by Churchill College.

Access and Use

The collection is open for consultation by researchers using Churchill Archives Centre, Churchill College, Cambridge. Churchill Archives Centre is open from Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm. A prior appointment and two forms of identification are required.

Researchers wishing to publish excerpts from the papers must obtain prior permission from the copyright holders and should seek advice from Archives Centre staff.

1 Notes on two conversations between Lord Brimelow and Michael Burd. The topics of discussion follow a roughly chronological timetable of the events of 1945. Topics discussed during the first conversation were Poland, Yalta (February 1945), Lord Brimelow's first day at the Foreign Office, the Foreign Office and problems with Russia in 1945, the repatriation of Soviet citizens after the Second World War, Anglo-Soviet relations in 1945, the organization of the Foreign Office, Foreign Office personnel and individuals, Anglo-American co-operation, Communist ideology, and Potsdam (July 1945). Topics discussed during the second conversation were Foreign Office individuals, Stalin and the Politburo, the Hopkins Mission, the Russian elections, Democracy, the Yalta Declaration on liberated territories, finance, the London Council of Foreign Ministers, and the atomic bomb.
