The Papers of Sir Bryan Godfrey-Faussett

Title Journals and diaries
Reference BGGF 1
Covering Dates 1876–1945
Extent and Medium 118 items
Content and context

This section includes diaries, letterbooks, account books, scrapbooks and Midshipman's log books. The 'Private Journals', logs and diaries sometimes overlap, i.e. there is a journal or a diary covering the same period; but they have been catalogued chronologically as far as is practicable. In all they number no less than 111 volumes of which eleven are on loose leaves and are unbound. All are liberally interleaved with newspaper cuttings and other memorabilia, and taken together they constitute a remarkable and almost unbroken record covering some 70 years. With few exceptions, when Godfrey was too busy to write up his journal daily and reconstructed it later from rough notes and pocket diaries kept at the time, the entries appear to have been made contemporaneously or very nearly so. The last diary entry, reading 'Sun out for a short time, rather cool' was made only twelve days before Godfrey's death.
