Sir Angus Edward Malise Bontine Cunninghame Graham of Gartmore was born in 1893 the son of Commander C. E. F. Cunninghame Graham. In 1924 he married (Mary) Patricia Hanbury and they had one son and one daughter. In 1914 he joined HM Yacht Victoria and Albert and served in the Grand Fleet, 1914-1918. Following this highlights of his career included being Senior Naval Officer, West River, China, 1936-1938; Captain of HM Signal School, 1939-1941; Captain of HMS Kent, 1941-1943; Commodore of Royal Naval Barracks, Chatham, 1943-1945; ADC to King George VI; Rear-Admiral Commanding 10th Cruiser Squadron, and 2nd in Command Home Fleet, 1945-1946; he was placed on the retired list in 1951. Cunninghame Graham died 14 February 1981.

The papers comprise signals, letters and miscellaneous papers relating to Admiral Cunninghame Graham's Naval service in both world wars and the inter-war period; his correspondence with Professor Arthur Marder and his correspondence on the subject of the libel action brought by Captain Jack Broome, RN, against David Irving for his book on convoy PQ 17; and papers, press-cuttings and recollections dating from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s.

Cunninghame Graham deposited his papers (ref. ANCG 1) at Churchill Archives Centre in 1977 and 1978 through Captain Stephen Roskill. The additional papers (ref. ANCG II 1-4) were deposited by his widow shortly after his death in 1981.

The collection is owned by Churchill College, Cambridge.

Access and Use

The collection is open for consultation by researchers using Churchill Archives Centre, Churchill College, Cambridge. Churchill Archives Centre is open from Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm. A prior appointment and two forms of identification are required.

Researchers wishing to publish excerpts from the papers must obtain prior permission from the copyright holders and should seek advice from Archives Centre staff.
