Stair Carnegie Agnew was born in Edinburgh in 1872, the son of Sir Stair and Georgina Agnew. He was educated at Sedbergh School, then Trinity College, Cambridge. Agnew was admitted to the Inner Temple in 1893 and called to the Bar in 1896. From 1987 to 1911, Agnew worked as a company lawyer in Russia. In 1918, Agnew married Sylvia Belville Bremner (of Sidmouth, Devon). He died in 1940.
The collection chiefly consists of letters written by Agnew to his parents which include descriptions of life in Russia (1897-1911), a short essay by Agnew on Russian peasants and a few photographs.
