Adrian Grant Duff was born in London in September 1869 and was educated at Wellington College and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. In 1906 he had married Hon. Ursula Lubbock, the daughter of 1st Lord Avebury. He served with the Black Watch, being appointed successively 2nd Lieutenant in 1889, Captain in 1898, Major in 1907 and Lieutenant-Colonel in 1914. He was posted with the Black Watch to India (1897-8) and South Africa (1902). He served at Staff College, 1903-4, and then from 1905-9 was in the Department of Military Operations at the War Office. In 1910 he was appointed Assistant Secretary (Military) to the Committee of Imperial Defence where he had responsibility for the production of the War Book, a plan for mobilisation in the case of future war. In 1913 he rejoined the Black Watch, taking command of the 1st Battalion in May 1914. He was killed in action in September 1914 at the battle of the Aisne.
Photocopies of diaries and correspondence
The originals of these papers were placed on loan at Churchill College in 1971 & 1972. They were withdrawn for sale in May 1996 by Grant Duff's family.

The collection is open for consultation by researchers using Churchill Archives Centre, Churchill College, Cambridge. Churchill Archives Centre is open from Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm. A prior appointment and two forms of identification are required.
