Messages to Parkes congratulating him on his promotion: (1) an O.H.M.S. envelope of the Canton Consulate addressed (in English) to Sir Harry Smith Parkes, Peking, postmarked Canton, 12 December 1883, and including an English pencil note on the front reading 'Congratulations of Canton servants'; (2) an envelope containing a two-page letter (in Chinese) from Lu Hsiao-t'ing to Parkes congratulating him on his promotion to Beijing; and (3) an envelope containing a one-page greeting (in Chinese) from Feng Yüan. 3 envelopes. |

Letter from Wen Chong-han. An undated three-page letter from Wen Chong-han acknowledging the receipt of a letter of 25th and of the arrival of the Consul at Shanghai. He writes that the judgement regarding trouble-makers against the Church has been submitted to the superior courts and is waiting the final decision. There is also a short loose note in English reading 'as to the sentences I didn't ask for the names', followed by three Chinese names. The letter is stored in a used envelope labelled (in English) 'Sir Harry S Parkes KCB GCMG Peking', and postmarked Shanghai, 16 January 1885. 1 envelope. |
