Content and context

A wide range of photographs from (predominantly) China and Hong Kong dating mainly from the 1920s and 1930s. The series includes photographs of directors, staff and associates of Jardine, Matheson & Co.; buildings, offices and ships in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Tientsin and Tsingtao, mostly belonging to the company; and various social events. Many of the photographs date from the Sino-Japanese conflict in 1937 and reflect the impact of the fighting on Shanghai and other cities.

1 Panorama of Shanghai. A panoramic photograph of Shanghai showing the harbour and including pencil notes to indicate various sites, including the China Navigation Company's warehouses, the French Settlement, the English and American Concessions, and the American Settlement.

The album is undated, but probably originates from around 1914, the year in which the Chinese government agreed a foreign loan for the construction of the Nanking-Hunan Railway, underwritten by the British & Chinese Corporation Ltd.
