Content and context

In 1873 a syndicate led by Hugh Matheson (1821-1898) purchased the Rio Tinto mines in Spain. The syndicate launched the Rio Tinto Co. Ltd the same year, with Hugh Matheson as President and Matheson & Co. Ltd as agents.

The document is a manuscript copy of a letter from A.G. Dallas, Deputy Chairman, Hugh M. Matheson, Chairman, and Henry Doetsch, Director, of the Mines of Rio Tinto, to Charles T. Prebble, regarding the quantity of minerals required for 1881 and the plans to be followed for developing the mines, 24 November 1880, 11 pages. The envelope is numbered 15.
