A wide range of different types of declarations committing the signatory or signatories to perform or refrain from particular act or acts. These documents differ from agreements and contracts in being made by a single party.

1 Promise of William Henry and Josiah Thomas. A promise by William Cobb Henry and Josiah Thomas, captain of the barque 'Agnes', to transport 1,200 bales of cotton from Calcutta to Lintin on board the 'Agnes' for Captain John Cruickshank, dated Calcutta, 30 January 1831.

16 Promise of Allum. A copy of promise by Allum that, in consideration of his being allowed to occupy the house and premises called the Tuilleries rent-free for three months, he will remove from the premises and give up possession to Jardine, Matheson & Co. at the expiration of this term on 14 June, and will also relinquish all claim, title and interest to the lease promised to him by Adam Scott, dated Hong Kong, 19 March 1855.

21 Promise re the treasure of the 'Phantom'. Two copies of an unsigned promise to Captain H.S. Sargent, late commander of the 'Phantom', and to his agents Augustine Heard & Co. and George Basil Dixwell, to take responsibility for claims relating to the treasure rescued by Sargent from the 'Phantom' after the ship was lost on the Pratas shoal while travelling from San Francisco to Hong Kong, dated Victoria, Hong Kong, 10 October 1862.

26 Promise of representatives of the Prince of Satsyuma. A copy of a promise by the representatives of the Prince of Satsyuma (Satsuma), that in the event of being unable to pay Glover & Co. the amounts due on the draft drawn on the Satsyuma Agency Nagasaki by the officers of Satsyuma in London, to hand over the steamer 'Kiola' to the Company, dated Nagasaki, 1 March 1867.

27 Promise to paint a steamer and boats. A promise by a Chinese to paint the outside of a steamer and of three of her boats, dated Shanghai, 14 December 1868. There is also a dhobi chit in Chinese, with English additions in pencil, which was found with the promise.

28 Promise of Edwin Watson. A copy of a promise (covenant) by Edwin Burges Watson of Yokohama to guarantee the fulfilment of the obligations of Nakahara Kuninoguke to Jardine, Matheson & Co. under their agreement regarding the Takasima Mines, and to render assistance in procuring the due performance by Goto Shojiro of his agreements with Kuninoguke, 3 June 1879. The document includes a copy of Kuninguke's deed of covenant and undertaking with Jardine, Matheson & Co., dated Yokohama, 2 June 1879.

31 Promise of Yü Ying Loi. A promise by Yü Ying Loi, Hong Kong, to Jardine, Matheson & Co. to withdraw his objection to the firm erecting a pier overlapping his water frontage in return for an annual payment from the company of $5, 15 January 1885. The promise is in the form of a letter to the company, and includes the signature of a witness.

32 Promise to absolve H. Holler. A copy of an undated promise by merchants and shippers trading in China (names not given) to absolve H. Holler, master of the North German barque 'Taikun', from blame with regard to any claims made against him as a result of his having returned to the signatories the cargo of tea laden by them on the 'Taikun' at Foochow, which had been destined for Sydney. They also promise to retrieve the bills of lading for the cargo from the consignees in Sydney, and to hand them discharged and acquitted to the North German Consul at Shanghai.

35 Promise to William Tarrant. A promise by a Chinese to William Tarrant committing himself to the terms under which Tarrant, as his agent, will charter a vessel to transport Chinese passengers to California. The document is dated at Victoria, Hong Kong, but there is no time date.
